The Price of Bricks
Ahmad Mallah + Rebecca Lillich // Krüger
Installation- video work- live performance
Premiere at Big Art 2024, Het Slotervaart, Amsterdam, 26-29 Sep 2024
The Price of Bricks is a collaborative project between Ahmad Mallah and Rebecca Lillich // Krüger, exploring the physical and emotional cost of rebuilding after destruction. Using a combination of live performance, a pile of bricks and a two screen video installation, the project examines how bricks serve as both barriers and building blocks—simultaneous symbols of oppression and hope.
This current work is a first task in an ongoing series of exercises exploring the definition of a brick.
Similar to the duo’s first project The Ladder (2023,) the series will evolve through various tasks researching and deciphering the symbolic object in front of them.
In task 1, the duo sit and build a wall through their bodies, both an act of agency and caging as they become part of what holds them. The wall will be both a barrier and a canvas—symbolizing borders, restrictions, and the structures we build to protect ourselves, yet also a site for resilience and transformation.
